dominion still by far with the most out. 120,000 customers out in northern virginia. pepco about 29,000 outages. bg & e has 92,000 outages in montgomery, prince georges, calvert, counties. on the phone right now, we have dan from dominion to help us look at the timeline for restoration. are you there this morning? >> good morning. tell us when do you think you might be able to get back out there and start taking a look at what you need to restore? >> our guys are chomping at the bit and as soon as it's daylight, they want to out there and get to work. >> do you have any idea, you're focusing mainly on northern virginia. where do you see the most outages that you might be able to repair and get the most amount of people back on? >> well, while we will certainly bear the brunt of the storm and it wasn't as bad as everybody anticipated, we still have

120,000 customers out here so we'll follow our normal practice and do assessment today. we will restore critical infrastructure. and while we're doing that, we expect we'll get a good junk of these customers back on today too. no idea yet at this point as to when we'll have everybody back on. >> i know you probably haven't been out because it's still dark. any idea of any potential problems or issues you may run into when doing this, just like you do in other storms that could possibly slow the process down? >>, you know, there's some flooding in a few areas that might hinder our access. there's certainly going to be trees down across some roads. those are the kind of things we expect to find after a storm such as this. >> now, dan, give us an idea too -- like how -- is there any areas specifically, by looking at the numbers. and again, i know you haven't been out there, but any area that's been harder hit than

others that you're dealing with? >> i haven't had a chance to look at that at this point to find out. i know that fairfax had a fair number of people that were out in that area but i don't know if those were scattered or if it's one big outage. so we will determine all those things here in the next few hours. >> how can people help you out? any of your customers, what would you ask anybody at the table to actually hear what you're telling us this morning, hopefully maybe some folks have power and can get the message out, what it is that you would like to get across to people this morning? >> again, i can only say we want people to be safe. i mean, they went to bed last night. it wasn't too bad out. there wasn't a lot of trees and limbs down. this morning, there could be trees down and buried and twisted in the trees could be the wires. just use extreme caution. make sure you know where the power lines are in your yard and stay away from those areas if they appear to be down. if they're down, give us a call

at 1-866-366-4357. and the other thing they can do is if their power is out, please call us. don't think that your neighbors have called and you don't need to report your outage. every time we have a big storm, we have five or six people left and they never called. >> all right, dan with virginia dominion power. thanks so much for talking with us this morning. we appreciate it and good luck out there today. as if all of this wasn't enough to talk about, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck just off the west coast of canada. it hit about 10:30 last night and was centered about 150 miles southwest of prince rubert british columbia. it's an after shock of the magnitude 7.7 that hit on saturday night. so far, there are no reports of any significant damage. hurricane sandy is severely affecting the presidential race, which we knew it might.

with one week before election day, the candidates canceled all their events today. president barack obama is at the white house and monitoring the impact. aids for governor mitt romney say if anything he'll take part in some sort of relief effort. it's all very much up in the air right now depending on the storm. >> we've got plenty ahead this morning, but first, some areas just aren't dealing with rain. a look at snow in west virginia and north carolina. >> maryland also getting snow as well.

slammed the shore last night and it is deadly. at least 13 are reported dead and five million are in the dark. schools from virginia to maine are closed today. states of emergency declared in eight different states and in new york city, transportation officials are worried about seawater flooding some subways. >> we saw the picture earlier too. it shows how hard it hit up there. we got a significant hit as well. >> we'll have to wait until morning to see some of the damage. there was serious flooding last night. things are winding down. that is the good news. we are not done way few of the threats. one of those will be somed intoing here over the next several hours. we continue to see the rainfall. the rivers are starting to crest in some places. we have a fled warning through much of the area here through about 11:00 this morning. there is your live look at your

radar. we've still got rain falling across the area. just to the south now and east of washington as you get down towards oxon hill to the south side of the beltway there working down to virginia. -- we have a flood warning through much of the area here through about 11:00 this morning. this is all pinwheeling around what is left of sandy which is just to our north. it is up near harrisburg, pennsylvania as we speak. it is not moving terribly fast. you can see the rain showers just circulating in a clockwise rotation around that area of circulation. look out to the west in the mount tapes. i haven't shown you the winter storm warnings. -- look out to the west in the mountains. they continue to get snow. let's do current temperatures. it has gotten really chilly out there. 44 in washington. 41 in gaithersburg. 41 in leonardtown so

yesterday. metrorail service has been suspended until further notice. that means metrobus, metro access, montgomery county ride- on buses, vre, amtrak shut down today as the clean-up continues from sandy's aftermath if you will. beach drive shut down between knowles road and 410. we predicted it would flood and we'd have a lot of tree debris to clean up and that is exactly what we're finding. 29 at four corners between lockwood drive and university boulevard, that is shut down due to flooding. not too bad out there on the vats. for the most part, they are clear. this happens to be 270. the road spray kicking up in your face. 395 in both the hov and main line, no issues reported. it is our secondary roads, our neighborhood streets that we are concerned with this morning. heads up if you have to be out

on the road. if you come up to an intersection where the traffic lights are not working, you need to treat it as a four-way stop. stop. >> superstorm sandy is leaving her impact on many areas of the united states. >> new york was hit with flooding and damaging winds. right now, 670,000 have no power in the city and west chester county to the north. this is a picture of a transformer explosion in the big apple. the power was purposefully cut to lower manhattan to minimize damage from flood water he is personally to train stations. this is water gushing through an elevator and into a path in a station in new jersey. this is crazy. >> that is an amazing picture. this is also on amazing

we're back with our special coverage of superstorm sandy right now. parts of atlantic city are under water this morning including the roads going into the city. some residents disobeyed mandatory evacuations. new jersey governor chris christie called the people who stayed, quote stupid and selfish. we know there were mandatory evacuations in ocean city where sandy pack a powerful punch. >> fox 5's lauren demarco is live there now with a look at sandy's impact. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. the biggest thing we've been

saying right now is it is just cold and certainly windy. the highest wind gust yesterday up to 58 miles per hour. dim feeling some wind gusts right now as well . it appears the rain is pretty light right now. it comes in bands. it is definitely coming down but it doesn't really hurt you as it whips against you in the wind at this point. we have power right here. we are at 17th street at the boardwalk. downtown, everybody from second street down to the inlet on the bayside and from 11th on the bayside doesn't have power. they shut that power off as a proactive move. pretty cold for those folks. hopefully, not too many people there because the area below 17th street was under mandatory evacuation. we were told some 200 people did stay but then last night, crews went in and had to rescue

20 to 30 people because of the highed into waters, several feet of flood waters there in the downtown area. further north, also some damage. around 54th street, there was a restaurant, mackey's, flood water up almost to my knees. then also, i was told by the emergency management center that near street 130, there is a housing complex called montego bay. apparently, those homes flooded now and they are dealing with that currently. the roads headed into ocean city, route 09 and route 50, closed to inbound traffic. all of the street here south shut down. that will remain the case. it is just too dangerous out here. they want folk that remain in the area to stay indoors. win picking up here and it is rather cold. so that is the latest from ocean city. back to you guys. >> all right. seeing the wind really starting

welcome back to fox 5 morning news. it is 4:45 right now. the win and rain, it is still out there but not as bad as it was. >> we survived most of the big brunt of this. now, we have to deal with what's left over and rain. for more on that, let's get to tucker barnes to get an update on the weather. >> you seem so excited about it. >> well, you know, the sun is not shining. it brings me down a little bit. i don't the sun be shining ever this time of day, right? >> oh, no, tucker! >> wisdom is absolutely right. things are winding down. that doesn't mean we're quite done with the threats. there is one of the leftover

bands associated with sandy there out towards annapolis and severna park and that has a pretty good rain rate to t just to the north and west of the city, we have pockets of pretty good rain. you can see most of the area still enduring some showers out there. the rain will be with us through a good part of the day. it will be scattered in nature this afternoon. we'll add to some already pretty impressive rain totals. generally 5 inches plus across the area. that will likely lead to some additional river flooding that. will sort of be the next stage of the story here. we'll be talking about some river flooding across the region and the potential for some tidal flooding as well as we get into the afternoon and eke hours with our next high tide cycle. let's go to the next map. let me show you what is left over with our superstorm. sandy's center of circulation would be right about there, right up near harrisburg, pennsylvania. you can see the big swirl, the big wraparound taking place and a lot of moisture still available.

we'll be dealing with rain for a good part of the day. out to the south and west of us, that is cold enough for snow. if you are watching out to the west as you get out into the mountains, there some are indications that the air will temporarily turn cold enough that some of that could transition to snow for you as well. just look out for that possibility. i think temperatures will still stay well above 32. you are not going to be dealing with -- it won't stick but you might see some white snowflakes out there at some point. 29, that is the current wind gust here in washington. 28 in ocean city. gradually, wind are getting better. they will owe casually gust over the next few hours close to -- occasionally gust over the next few hours close to 50. wind south and west, 20 to 35. that will be the first part of the day. rain likely, still windy. of course, not as windy as yesterday so that is some good news. that is your accu-weather seven- day forecast. lots of clouds tomorrow. we gradually improve over the

next couple of days. by thursday and friday, back into the sunshine. any time we're not worrying about a superstorm looks like a god weekend forecast and i think it will be this weekend. that is weather. let's do some traffic and say another great good morning to julie wright. >> all right. on the roads, we got to get there first. i got to tell you, it is clean- up. we are waiting for the water to recede and waiting for things to get moving again. service suspended again on metrorail. you will find that metrobus, metro access, montgomery county bus has been suspended. amtrak northeast corridor service suspended as well. we have a good portion of beach drive blocked off between old avenue and 410. due to storm damage. little falls parkway, massachusetts avenue, out towards river road, clean-up is continuing. north of town, 198 remains blocked off between sweitzer lane and old gunpowder road. we have a portion of route 1

under water here at this time. that is closed off due to flooding. 108 at new hampshire avenue, storm damage reported here. 29 remains should down between lockwood drive and four corners. that is what we're finding as folks gently make their way out the front door and headed out around town this morning. be very careful. watch out for the slick roads and watch out for traffic signals that may not be working. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. we are following some breaking news related to superstorm sandy. at least 50 homes have been destroyed in a raging fire in queens, new york. this is the beach town of breezy point, one of the lowest point of new york city. fire started around 11:00 last night. it has gone to six alarms so a real disaster there coming out of the storm. we will keep you updated on this throughout the morning. more amazing pictures as a result of this storm. here in our area, some more residents in the huntington

section of fairfax county could soon be forced out of their homes. the fear that is area could be hit with some severe flooding later on today. holly morris is live in huntington with the latest developments. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. you're right. this is a still developing story. there have been rescue workers and businesspersonle here all evening working the scene. some evacuations went on last night -- and businesspersons here all evening working the scene. and give me the update on how the situation stands right now. >> right now, water is about four feet above sea level. it dropped about two feet since the peak. it was at about six feet earlier in the evening. it got up the road but did not get into any houses in huntington. >> >> reporter: so it was good that they did the evacuations? >> fantastic. the national weather service was predicting between 5 and 10

inches of rain. with 10 inches of rain, the water gets into the houses. we are expecting to get 1 to 2 more inches. we will be monitoring. there is still the possibility of flooding, however, it is unlikely. i believe the water will be getting up into the road again but will not get into the houses. >> reporter: when are we looking at it to get into the road? >> around high tide. it could get up to the road. >> reporter: what makes it so unpredictable? is it just the amount of rain? >> it is the amount of rain and also the intensity, the amount that falls over a very short duration of time affects this area because it is a realtively small watershed. >> reporter: do you find that most of the resident are pretty relieved obviously? >> yes. >> reporter: this storm could have been a lot worse. >> it could have been a lot worse but we still need to monitor it. >> reporter: when will we really know we're out of the woods. >> for this area of mount

vernon, it will be late tomorrow might. >> reporter: what about the area they were tucking about bellevue and new alexandria area. they put about 1900 households on notice there. >> we are monitoring there as well. we do have flood control structures that do control some of the flood waters. at this point, we are monitoring that. we are looking at the different tide levels. but at this point, there is no problem down there. >> reporter: and there is other people monitoring besides you. do you get to go home soon? >> yes, i got to go home soon. we have two peoples at eachite. >> thank you for giving us an update. they are cautiously optimistic. they are on alert and still monitoring it but right now, it looks like things will be okay. >> good news there. >> thank you so much. fox 5, your source for tracking sandy on air and online. coming up income, how you can get your videos broadcast live on our newscast. >> we'll run down everything
